SHE’S one of America’s sweethearts and won the world over with her breakthrough role in 12 Years a Slave, but sources say Lupita Nyong’o’s nice girl persona is nothing but an act.
The 32-year-old Oscar winner is
reportedly displaying diva-like behaviour on the set of her Broadway-bound play, Eclipsed and has been overshadowing the rest of the cast with her demands.
Sources have told the Daily Mail that herEclipsed co-stars Pascale Armand, Akosua Busia, Zainab Jah, and Saycon Sengbloh were initially excited to work with Nyong’o but now can’t stand her after she made no effort to build chemistry with the theatre actresses.
“She declined all invitations to go out to lunch with her cast members and keeps to herself in the shared dressing room quarters while the ladies went out,” the source said.
She even tried to get her own separate dressing room at The Public Theater, but the venue didn’t have the space for it.”
Her co-stars went so far as to say the Hollywood star is an “ice princess” and a “manipulative b*tch” behind the scenes.
“She doesn’t speak to anyone when she’s not on stage and in character. She has security backstage because she claims she has a stalker.
“She only wants to do press interviews alone, despite the show being an ensemble piece. She’s done everything she can to alienate herself from her co-stars,” the source added.
The cast were reportedly told after the opening night of Eclipse that they were not allowed to bring family and friends to the after-party, due to the celebration’s intimate nature, but that didn’t apply to Nyong’o, who “had a full entourage trailing her every move.”
Saycon Sengbloh has now decided to exit the production before the show’s scheduled end and has not given a reason.
Executive producer of the show’s Broadway run, Stephen C. Byrd, was reportedly adamant that Nyong’o be cast in Eclipsed.
“Stephen paid her top-dollar to be in this production. He’s head over heels to have her in the show and has made it clear to everyone, whatever Lupita wants, she gets,” the source spilt.
“He’s assured her that this is her show and he’ll move mountains to please her.”
Nyong'o is set to appear in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, playing pirate Maz Kanata. She will also star in the live-action remake of The Jungle Book as Raksha.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits cinemas in Australia 17 December.
